Much has been said of the opposition of Democrats to school choice. If you look at their ranks, though, you can see that they have a solid plan for school choice; school choice for the rich only. It falls right in line with all their other elitist ideas.
The rich have the option to choose the school that works best for their children. They exercise that choice in large numbers. Even among the elected officials in Washington they exercise that choice. Clearly, they have no problem with the quality of private schools.
Yet, when you look at the failures of inner city schools, and the need for reform and choice, they do everything in their power to remove that choice and keep it far, far away. Republicans instituted school choice in D.C., yet when the Democrats took power, one of their first moves was to remove that choice. Apparently, that is a choice reserved for the wealthy, not the poor.
It's interesting that the Democrats still enjoy being labeled the party of the poor. In every step, Republicans offer real choice and solutions for the poor, seeking to elevate them above where they are and where they are destined to be. Republicans offer a hand up, while Democrats offer only a hand out. Republicans are tying to instill the idea that hard work has its reward, and should be offered to all. Democrats seek class warfare, and to keep the poor under the thumb of the government at the threat of losing their handout. In reality, it's just another form of slavery.
As long as the Democrats have the media as their lap dog, barking their rhetoric and lies, this perception will never change. Surely if we could ever get school choice enacted, the poor would see how the "other half" live and desire to get there. Maybe, then, the tide would turn, and Democrat elitists would be shown to be the evil people they truly are.
